Harriet Faulkner was born in 1846 and at various times lived in Rose Hill and later in the City of Oxford, at first with her parents and siblings and later with her own children and husband, the rat catcher. Her life at times saw hardship and privation, but she lived to the age of 78. Her story is set in the context of glimpses of 19th century life in the village parishes of Iffley and Cowley, in Oxford and elsewhere.
