The last evening talk for 2017 will be on Tuesday 19th December.
The speaker will be Dr Simon Wenham, a history tutor for Oxford University’s Department of Continuing Education. His special interests include Victorian Britain, businesses, gender, Oxford, religion and leisure: indeed Simon has talked to the Society before, on the history of Salter Brothers. We enjoyed it so much we bought a copy of his book for the Society Library!
This December he will be telling us all about the Great Exhibition of 1851.
The first illustration below shows Paxton’s magnificent Crystal Palace; the second catches a bit of the great fire which destroyed in 1936.
A rather sad image — but our evening will end with some cheering Christmas refreshments!
