Just a little over a month to go before the 2016 – 2017 programme of evening talks gets underway! This year the underlying theme is “travels, exploration, and foreign adventures.”
Towards the end of September/early October, existing members will receive their printed copies of the programme, together with formal notice of the AGM . The AGM proceeds the first talk on Tuesday 18th October, at 7.30pm in Iffley Church Hall.
I have been enjoying dipping into the website Art UK which now includes free online access to digital reproductions of the oil paintings held by Oxford colleges, as well as many other private and public institutions. (Indeed, I have even joined in the project doing some picture tagging to make increase the number of search terms you can use beyond just painter, subject, date or style) Searching for Iffley produces images of the Mill and the River – but I have also found some rather endearingly naive portraits of Oxford men of past generations: such as Benjamin Ferrers (d 1732) group portrait of Thomas Cockman (1675–1745), Master of University College, Oxford, and Fellows Sitting in the Old Master’s Lodgings.
